International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955
The Problem & Challenges
Established in 1948, IUOE Local 955 is the Alberta chapter of the International Union of Operating Engineers and one of the largest IUOE locals in North America. The Union business is complex with a very large membership, serving over 100 agreements in place across Alberta.
Working closely with the Union, they gain access to a ready-trained workforce with the appropriate certifications. However, managing this complexity with legacy systems that dated back to 1997 created serious operational bottlenecks - from membership management and dispatch to financials and compliance reporting.
The Union needed a modern, integrated solution that could handle the full breadth of their operations while scaling with their growing membership and data needs.
UnionX's Approach to Developing a Solution
Addressing these challenges is a large undertaking and requires an in-depth understanding of the Union's business. With over a decade of experience working with Unions, UnionX is well equipped to leverage an agile approach to software development and delivery.
Leveraging the agile development methodology, Scrum, UnionX broke the project into iterative sprints - delivering working software early and continuously, incorporating feedback from Union leadership and staff at every stage. This approach minimized risk and ensured the solution truly fit the Union's needs before full deployment.
The Solution & Impact
When UnionX first came on board, the Union was relying on a system that dated back to 1997. Today, the new software suite runs virtually every aspect of IUOE Local 955's business, down to producing accurate financials approved by professional auditors.
Concerns with the ability to scale the system as requirements grow have been addressed - the platform is built to handle increasing data volumes and membership complexity without degradation in performance.
Local 955 is very pleased with what they were able to create with UnionX. The solution has fundamentally transformed how the Union operates - freeing staff to focus on serving members rather than wrestling with outdated technology.
